I walk through the gates and enter into my garden. It feels like holy ground. I have nurtured and tended this small plot of earth for over twelve years. Each year, I learn more, grow new crops, harvest organic food for our table, and garner flowers for myself and my friends. I am not the most organized grower. I plant seeds, forget about them, and then am surprised when something unexpected pops from the soil. I enjoy the haphazardness and the wildness more than I should, but one rule has endured: no phones within the garden gates.
My family and friends know I will be in my garden if they can't find me. They cannot call or text me; they must find me. I am off the grid and happy to have this peaceful location. In the last week alone, I have heard birds of all kinds, including hawks and owls. Hummingbirds have flown by my ears, and butterflies have landed on my shoulder. I have observed a new tree frog, smaller than a watermelon seed, and have watched every variety of bee land on flowers and blooms.
If my phone was within this space, I would never have had these moments of connection to the natural world, and I know my soul deeply requires the healing power of the outdoors.
I have committed this year to being outside whenever possible. Sometimes, that means doing my work outside, including time on a device. However, I have learned that being outside for my job allows me some quiet moments of being unplugged before I start the next thing. I realize that only some have the opportunity to do their work outdoors, but we can all create a space with no devices: a drive, a walk, time sitting on the front steps. The key is to find your space, your spot, your moment of quiet every day. Be present in your space, breathe deeply, and enjoy the disconnection. Your soul, mind, and body will thank you.
