The goal of Classical Christian education is to build upon a foundation of memorization in the Trivium's Grammar, to teach students to reason on that foundation in Logic, and to defend with grace and beauty in Rhetoric. The award-winning classical school my daughter founded (axiomclassical.org) has an extraordinary requirement for all graduating seniors: Each must choose a unique topic to explain and defend, write a formally-formatted 15 page paper with footnotes about it, and then, before a panel of judges and their peers and parents, must stand WITHOUT NOTES and deliver from memory the entire text of their paper. And then answer questions. How do they achieve this? One technique my daughter uses is akin to the Memory Palace, wherein different objects and features of the room where they will make the delivery are utilized as mental prompts. Most impressive to witness.

I used to doodle my toddlers witticisms in a sketchbook and I was devastated when the book was lost on a vacation. In my grief I typed every quote I could remember into the notes app on my phone, and I’ve been leaning really hard into digital art ever since. Maybe it’s time to go back. Thanks for all these ideas!!
